Copperplate Calligraphy Monogrammed Notecards (+ Letterpress Instruction)

Sat. October 28th 9-12:30 (Calligraphy)

Sat. November 4th time TBD (Letterpress)

Laura Capp (of Postscript in Ashland, NE) and I will be leading a two-part workshop which will not only give you a foundation in uppercase Copperplate and an introduction to monogram design, but will also expose you to the basics of letterpress printing, all of which will allow you to walk away with 24 flat letterpress-printed notecards bearing your custom monogram!

Omaha calligrapher and lettering artist Cheryl Dyer will lead the first workshop teaching students the component strokes of the uppercase Copperplate alphabet and will walk you through designing your very own monogram. In the week between, we'll order plates of the monograms to print from, and the following Saturday, you will sign up for a one-hour window to come join Laura Capp, proprietor of Postscript and letterpress printer, for a brief introduction to the basics of printing on a Vandercook. Together, you will letterpress print your monogram onto flat notecards, AND you'll get to select decorative paper from the shop to cut into envelope liners for a stack of truly gorgeous and special custom notecards. This workshop is capped at 10 students.  All supplies are included in the cost of tuition.

*NEW* Italic Calligraphy, 5 week course

Though calligraphy is currently enjoying a revival, most people are familiar only with popular pointed pen lettering styles. However, there are so many other types of calligraphy to be enjoyed! Italic calligraphy-- a style that was developed in Italy during the renaissance -- is Cheryl's favorite hand to write. Italic is (in the words of calligrapher Gillian Hazeldine) "probably the most important script for the modern calligrapher as it is capable of almost endless variation, able to express on the page a huge range of emotions." This adaptable, beautiful script is also a joy to write.

Students will learn about the history of Italic and be introduced to tools and lettering materials before learning basic strokes -- first with a pencil and finally with a steel nib. Over the course of 5 sessions, we will learn both lower and uppercase letters as well as discuss layout and design for a small final piece.

Students will leave class with detailed exemplars, guide sheets for home practice as well as all necessary calligraphy supplies. No calligraphy experience is needed -- beginners welcome! Intermediate students will benefit from guided review by an experienced instructor.

Supplies not included; a supply list will be sent upon registration, and supply packets will be available at the shop.
