All of us are meant to create

… which is why I love leading weekend workshops, one-hour Zoom classes, week-long intensives, or half-day instruction. (I’ve got options!) I’m also happy to give a talk and demo for your organization. What is at the heart of my teaching is a true enjoyment of leading others into artistic expression and inspiring creative freedom. I truly think we’re all meant to create. I find that in my workshops, students inspire each other, and I learn from my students, too.

Calligraphy Sampler Class

The word calligraphy is used to describe an assortment of different styles of handwritten letters. So, if you’re someone wanting to learn calligraphy, how to you know where to start? How do you find out what styles you’re interested in?

This class is idea for those new to calligraphy and ready to begin experimenting with it. Students will be presented with a broad overview of what calligraphy is as well as the information needed to start writing. We will learn how to use the three primary types of calligraphy tools--pointed pen, broad-edge pen and brush – all of which yield very different styles of letters. And, students will be provided with take-home tools and exemplars (letter examples) for three different calligraphy styles as well as watch writing demos and do some preliminary writing practice themselves.

This class will be a perfect venue to ask questions, experiment with pens, and have a fun morning with fellow letter-curious folks. Take-home supplies are included in the cost!

Perfectly Imperfect Letters

The lettering work of David Jones (1894-1974) and Ben Shahn (1898-1969) celebrates both classical Roman letterforms and the idea of “perfectly imperfect.” In this class, we will look to formal, classically proportioned capitals as well as the wildly inventive and quirky letters of Jones and Shahn as inspiration for drawing our own letters. We will then make simple stencils of our letters, which we will use to hand-print greeting cards, postcards, or a simple accordion book. This all-levels class is perfect to take if you’re interested in hand-lettering or simply want to spend a fun morning creating.

Writing and Writing: Penning Your Poetry in a Unique Script with Cheryl Dyer

As calligraphers, we are accustomed to working with words. But often the words we use in our art pieces are not ones we’ve composed ourselves—rather, they are borrowed from other writers. Usually there is nothing wrong with this approach. But, as creatives, we do indeed have the option of drafting our own phrases, poems or prose. In this dual-topic workshop half of our class time will be focused on writing poetry and half on writing calligraphy. This class will be highly generative through the use of many helpful writing prompts. We will also discuss important ideas to consider when writing poems and as well as literary devices like enjambment, sound, rhythm and metaphor that can assist with meaning-making in our poetry. In the spirit of creating original wording, we will also develop our own historically rooted, yet highly-personalized Italic script variations with the intention of using them to pen our poetry. Poetry beginners welcome! Students need not have any writing experience to attend. However, it will be helpful for students to have at least a beginning-level working knowledge of a basic Italic hand.
