Flying Things
Originally published in The Gilded Weathervane
This morning, as I lay in bed and thought: I have no one
left here to pour into, a small bird
hit my window with such force
I startled and swooped up to see
if it was still living. Though shocked
by an invisible pane it quickly
ricocheted back into flight.
Later, I left my empty house, walked
and watched countless cicadas swarm in the air,
dipping and swerving in their spree of furious living.
They’d recently been loosed from crisp shells
only to discover that they had wings.
